Goodbye February

Jan Brett's The Easter Egg

My favorite Easter book.

100 Candles

Just bought some submersible, led battery-operated tea lights for the Easter Egg hunt luminaries. This is the second batch of tea lights I've purchased from 100 Candles. The first batch was a big hit in last year's Spirit Grove II: an enchanted forest. 100 Candles is a first-rate company.

Oriental Trading

Made a good-sized purchase online at Oriental Trading: candy, trinkets, egg hunting items. They've got nice, low prices. Will probably buy some more hanging ornaments at JoAnn's and/or Michaels as the big discounts arrive.

The Vision

I've talked with the director over at the local Goodwill office for the physically and mentally disabled, and she provided me with some guidelines for candy and toys, and told me to expect 15 residents.  As of right now, our 1st Annual Easter Egg Hunt will be held on Saturday, March 23 from 5-6 pm.  Here's the vision:

* A perfect weather setup would be partly cloudy, dry, and not too cold. We need clearing skies in the East, so we can see the rising moon, and we need a cloud bank in the west to block all or most of the sun. That way, the luminaries will shine more brightly. Not too much to ask from the Good Lord, right?

*  I will hang nearly 200 plastic, multi-colored Easter eggs on our front yard cherry tree. This will greet the residents, as will a small, Easter Egg Hunt sign.

*  Leading to the back gate, I will create a tunnel, much like I did for Spirit Grove. The tunnel will consist of 8 rod iron 'bird feed' hangers (may I borrow them again Mother in Law Holidays?), 8 hanging, multi-colored luminary jars, and 8 branches zip tied to each post, each tied at an angle so that opposite sides connect overhead.

*  Each luminary jar will be filled with water, a submersible Easter-colored tea light, and food dye. That way, I won't have to spray paint a bunch of jars again. I'm thinking orange, green, pink, and blue for colors.

*  The overhead branches will be adorned with lots of hanging Easter ornaments.

*  The tunnel will lead to the back gate, through which they will enter the backyard and start searching for plastic eggs. I will hide them throughout the yard.

* Background Easter music will be playing.

* Each resident will be given an Easter bag to collect 6 eggs, each of which will contain candy and one toy-like object.

* Once they have found all of the eggs, I will then present each of them with a palm-sized, egg-shaped Easter tin, which will have even more goodies inside.

Apparently, the Goodwill is pretty excited. We are too. Time to start getting things together.
